Geoffrey Chadsey's Gay Electric Works

Geoffrey has a great show aptly titled "Shift, Return"up at Electric Works in San Francisco thru Feb. 12th. Popped into the opening last Friday and was pleasantly pleased and disturbed by his works. They are both paintings and drawings, using watercolor pencils on frosted mylar, then painting or smearing some areas. The images are large in scale and the mylar gives them a luminous quality that suggests floating. He is obviously practiced and adept at drawing and sketching, the pieces have wonderful geometrical lines - shaping the bodies and  enhancing the gestures of the posers.
The subject matter is gay based with lots of trans-gender imagery and transformations, from one sex to another and from human to beast. Strong, emotive, sexual and in-your-face art, just fantastic. A ride on the emotional roller coaster of identity that confuses and torments some gay lovers. A few pieces were a little too blatant in their statements, a more subtle suggestion of genitalia would have still done the trick for me. (If you don't want to see any genitals, this may not be a show for you.) However, this is a great solo with moving portraits, compassionate humanity and strong imagery, very worth making the trip to see.

New Interview With John Seabury

John (sometimes known as Pynoman) is a local Bay Area artist who has shown with Eclectix a number of times. A skilled artist, graphic designer and comic illustrator, he is also a skilled musician, playing formerly with his band Psycotic Pineapple and today with The Deep. He has a fantastic wealth of gig posters he’s done over the years, as well as larger fine art silkscreens. Some of my favorite works are included in his two books,  his journals of collected black and white doodles and drawings - just chock full of wonderful characters, pineapples, curves, shapes and metamorphosis.

New Dali Museum in Florida

Dang! I didn't even know there was a Dali museum in St. Petersburg, Florida - and now they have a big new space. It opens on 1-11-11, great numbers for a grand opening! If you're nearby or want to go, below is the info. Great looking building, not to mention it's chock full of the surreal master's art - I am marking it down for my next visit to Florida!

1.11.11 Grand Opening Procession, Ribbon Cutting & Festival

Tuesday, January 11, 9:30 a.m. -3:00 p.m.

The public is invited to view a surreal procession departing from the current museum (located at 1000 Third Street South in St. Petersburg) at 9:30am and concluding at the new museum (located eight blocks north at One Dali Blvd.).  Entertainment, a dedication program with S.A.R. la Infanta Cristina of Spain, Duchess of Palma de Mallorca, and a ribbon cutting ceremony with Spanish Royalty presiding — starting at 11:00 a.m. — will mark the beginning of a new era for the Dalí at its new location. The festivities will continue until 3 p.m.
