Pix From The "Dystopia" Show - Super Surreal in Santa Monica

Visited the BeinArt Surreal Collective's show "Dystopia" at Copro Gallery in Santa Monica, along with a ton of other peeps. Great show, wonderful artists and incredible art. Way too many good ones to post them all, but here's a link to them. Met up with artists Pamela Wilson and Carrie Ann Baade, both looking happy and dapper. It was wonderful to finally meet people I have had an "online" relationship with for so long... Laurie Lipton, Sandra Yagi was there from SF and of course Jon Beinart.

Pictures From "Terribly Happy", Annie Owens' Solo Show

Being able to be at the opening of Annie's show at Copro Gallery was a total treat for me. Her works were spaced well, allowing the sparse feeling in the imagery to breathe. Every single piece was gorgeous, impeccably executed and full of the emotive charms we expect from Annie. And almost all of them were sold already!  Most the works I had been keeping abreast of as she completed them but there was one big surprise for me - titled, "Backwater Peccadillos". A large, tree framed swamp image of two girls floating in a boat, it became my favorite of the show. Just stupendous, they all need to be seen in person!

There are other shows going on at Copro right now which are really worth viewing as well. Especially the BeinArt Surreal Collective exhibit - "Dystopia". Another post is to come on it.

Our Top Art Picks: From The Warhol Reimagined Exhibit in San Francisco

Dropped in to the opening of the Warhol Reimagined show in SF. This is the first show at Warholian's new gallery- Project One, a combined bar-club-gallery (a smart way to pay the rent now-a days). Nice large gallery space, hopping youngish crowd and plenty of parking- due to it being off-the-beaten track a little in the "design district".
Nice show with lots of solid pieces, a very fun theme, re-doing Warhol. Many superb local artists I recognized and some new to me. Really enjoyed the creative idea behind the "soup can" wall, where artists re-did their own Campbell's soup can imagery.
Couldn't find the images on their site, so thought I'd share photos of our favorite ones with you here. (sorry for the blurry ones...) The exhibit is up until April 19th, so check it out!

Eclectix Interview With Artist Annie Owens

"Artist Annie Owens grew up and currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. She spent a fair amount of her childhood, watching classic horror movies with her musician brother. After receiving a degree in film and raising a daughter; she co-founded Hi-Fructose ( my personal fave art mag ) with her partner Attaboy, a superb artist as well. Both have shown and visited with Eclectix, in our brick and mortar days - their warm enthusiasm and support for newbrow art is always a welcome spark of hope.

Annie paints and draws girls, young women and crooked little houses in an achingly beautiful way. The blackest black of her ink work contrast nicely with a muted, pastel color palette. Her style is an unexpected and welcome mix of ...."

Art For International Women's Day

Jane Graverol - L’Esprit Saint (The Holy Spirit), 1965. Jane Graverol was a Belgian surrealist artist. She co-founded the magazines Temps mêlés and Les Lèvres Nues.

For Women's Day this year, I just started researching the web - for art related to women and women's history. Since we only get 2 days a year (Mother's Day being the second), we have to get as much out of it as we can! What are the elements that all women the world over,  have in common? The obvious biological ones - breasts, reproductive organs, menstruation and (of course) a bigger brain. Here follows an eclectic mix of interesting art related to women, grab a cup of java and take a deserved break.

Charlotte Newson created this great collage of Emmeline Pankhurst (leader of the British suffragette movement). It is made of a ton of not-so-famous women. You simply must check it out here.

One aspect of women's daily lives is the much under-rated tampon. Where would we be without it? An object that more than half the population stares at on a monthly basis - yet it is still considered "gross". What's up with that? So to get it out of the closet a little, here are some fun artworks created with tampons.
