Scott Scheidly’s Lustrous & Bony Botany

Artist Scott Scheidly was born in Ohio and currently lives in Florida. He produces some of the most beautiful paintings of skeletal art we’ve encountered - mixed with poetically rendered botanical subjects. From his humorous bio on his website, he also seems to share our fondness for eating paste in grade school. It hasn’t hurt his superb painting ability one bit!

BURN: Jason D’Aquino’s Matchbook Art

Remember when you got matches at every restaurant or venue? They are a lost art nowadays but Jason’s art makes them immortal. He creates tiny works on found surfaces, such as matchbooks, old vellums and antique ledgers. Small, tightly rendered little wonderments, graphites with highlights. His collection on matchbooks came as a desire to easily demonstrate the detail in his works, so that people would be able to compare it in scale, to a common object. Jason is a fantastic tattoo artist as well and is the owner of Leviathan in upstate New York.

From an interview in MetalInk- 

“MI: ...you were influenced by your mother, who was also an artist?

Jason: When I was really young, I used to hassle her to draw this, draw that. It amazed me the way she could pull something out of thin air. It was the closest thing I’d ever seen to magic. Pencil instead of a wand but just a few flicks of the wrist and you have something out of nowhere, and it affected me. I wanted to be able to do what she was able to do. I didn’t want to be a fireman, or a policeman like other kids.”

True Goth Art, Kevin Llewellyn

If you have ever watched LA Ink and noticed that killer painting (and frame) in the background of the tattoo shop (like I did), it is The Virgin Mary by Kevin (above). At first glance I mistakenly thought it was a Shawn Barber - just love this piece! Kevin’s work is about as “goth” as it gets, nice and dark, in subject matter as well as lighting. Obviously an experienced and adept painter, his images are cool and creepy, moody portraiture with a classic old-master feel. Some have a overly pornographic element, with a cheap shock value - whereas subtle, more erotic touches would enhance his works more. Of couse, that is my humble opinion. He is a young artist and shows a lot of promise, featured here are some fantastic favorites. Kevin currently has a solo show at Wonderland Gallery in LA.

Ron English Takes on Magritte

Dang! Just got this hot little piece in my inbox and you get to see it.  It's titled "Apple and the Afterlife", and it is so phenomenal! Right down to the apple core, in more ways than one. Announcement of Ron English's huge show at the Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion with over 200 pieces. Go if you can, wish I could.

We decided to start the screams right when all the muzak carols begin to invade, putting out pumpkins instead of Santa. So to get you thru the looming holidaze, Volume 5 will bring lots of scary monsters and super freaks to lighten the Hallmark load. And this issue packs a double whammy with some killer Day of the Dead art as well...
