Zhang Cuts It Up!

Jimmy Zhang rocked our foodie world with his knife expertise at the Eclectix culinary carving demonstration on Sunday. The crowd was duly impressed as a carrot became flowers that fell from his fingers like magic. Not to mention the little bird, a pair of intricate butterflies, a white radish rose with their beet juice tinted petal tips. From a cantaloupe grew a multi-layered lily on it's own pad. For the grand finale, a flowering watermelon, with translucent layers from dark green, white/lime to deep red. Resounding applause ( as well as harmonious ooooh's and aaahhh's) followed Jimmy's every creation and a good, fun & learning time was had by all!

Culinary Creations of the Food Variety

Some more random artful food creations, this time leaning heavily on the fruit carvings. Maybe most of us only do pumpkins at Halloween but there is a wealth of other stuff out there!
Credits follow: not necessarily in the right order ( when will Blogger put a caption option in?)
Warhol's soup can, rabbit fruit carving by Ivan Cholakov, graceful birds from Carving Institute, teacup & saucer by Elisa Werbler, a bouquet of melon flowers by Floral Concept, toy & object sculpture- "Muddy Stream from a Mug, Hamberger" by Teppeo Kaneuji, melon mouth by an unknown, spider melon from http://j-walkblog.com, dragons by Italian, Paolo Pachetti (pictured with one of his creations) and first, but not last, an underwater extravaganza by Jimmy Zhang. Dig those seahorses!

Giuseppe Arcimboldo - Italian Foodie Art, Old School!

Giuseppe Arcimboldo was an Italian painter best known for creating portrait heads made entirely of such objects as fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish, and books — that is, he painted representations of these objects on the canvas arranged in such a way that the whole collection of objects formed a recognisable likeness of the portrait subject.

The Milanese and the Hapsburgs couldn't get enough of him during his 16th century lifetime but, after his death, Giuseppe Arcimboldo's works languished unnoticed in some moldering closet of art history for over 300 years. Until, that is, the Surrealists came along, drew inspiration from his anthropomorphic paintings and touted the artist's name once again.
Vertumnus (Portrait of Rudolf ll) is one of the latest, and perhaps the very best surviving example of the artist’s ‘composed heads’. He painted it in 1591, during his final visit to his native Milan.

Food Meets Fashion- Bento!

Making the transition again linking food & fashion... some fun Japanese bento lunches. These were culled from many sites so it was hard to credit the makers. However, one site stood out as having many fun images.
